Dogdson came up with the idea of writing the novel upon his 5 mile journey to the village of Godstow with Reverened Robinson Duckworth's 3 daughters: Lorina, Alice, and Edith Mary. Dogdson knew that the journey ahead was going to be long needless to say, the story began as a means to keep the children entertained upon their journey to the village. Alice loved the story so much, she insisted that Dogdson write the stroy down for her, using her name as the lead character, so she would remember it.
